On August 8, 9 and 10, 2014, Steinbach RCMP partnered with Manitoba Public Insurance and conducted a series of Checkstops as part of the MPI Roadwatch Program. These Checkstops were scheduled to coincide with the Richer Rodeo in order to make local roads safer.
The Roadwatch Program allows for officers to enforce the Highway Traffic Act and focus on impaired drivers without taking resources from the local detachments.
During the three day program, more than 1,200 vehicles were stopped in the RM of Ste. Anne, RM of Hanover, RM of La Broquerie and the Steinbach area in order to detect and prevent impaired driving as well as to enforce the Highway Traffic Act.
RCMP arrested four impaired drivers, and five additional drivers had their licences suspended as a result of either alcohol or drug consumption. Ninety-two offences were issued under the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor and Gaming Act.
