With busy lifestyles and people on the go, a lot of time is spent in vehicles. There are many aspects to keep in mind when considering safety in a vehicle.
Plan Ahead
- Ensure you have your route planned before heading out
- Program any GPS before turning the key and allow sufficient time to reach your destination
- Have periodic mechanical check-ups on your vehicle to ensure it is in good working condition
- Check all fluids, tire pressure and windshield wipers
- Tell a friend or family member of your travel plans and your estimated arrival time
Inside the vehicle
- Ensure everyone is buckled up, including any pets travelling with you
- Put your cell phone away and out of sight
- Pull over before tending to any concerns that may arise
- Be aware of and follow the rules of the road
- If leaving your vehicle
- Always park in a well-lit area
- Always roll up the windows and lock your vehicle if leaving it for any length of time.
- Keep all valuables out of sight
- Always accompany young children to the bathroom if making a stop at gas stations, restaurants or any other rest area
- Never leave children alone in a vehicle.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle during extreme weather conditions
Offering Assistance
- Never pick up strangers and offer a ride
- Stay in your vehicle and call 911 for individuals who may need assistance along the roadway
