Cari Penner has announced her intention to run for re-election for Steinbach City Council. Cari has served as a councillor for the City of Steinbach for two terms from 1992-1998, during which time she also took on the duties of Deputy Mayor. She has served on council this term since 2010.
With a wealth of experience to draw on, Penner has chosen a platform that stresses two critical issues to bring to the attention of Steinbach citizens.
The first will raise awareness of the extreme rise in policing costs as the City grows.
“Currently our share of police costs stands at approximately $1.9 million dollars, or 70% of total police costs. Once we reach the population threshold of 15,000, our share balloons to 90%, in the range of $300,000 to $400,000 per year. This increase is alarming. Those funds can be used elsewhere, or the savings could be passed on to the taxpayer. Now is the time to study our options. Our population is currently 13,524.”
Penner also stressed the importance of City Council’s continued commitment to upgrade sport and arts facilities.
“We have focused on lagoons and landfills in the past and everything is in place for growth and development. The next step is to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds through culture and sport. Those activities bring a richness and diversity to the community. Our sports and arts facilities are overcrowded and aging, and we need to invest in the community’s recreational infrastructure. I believe with diligent planning we can keep it affordable for our ratepayers.”
