Annual sewer cleaning and televising throughout the City of Steinbach is set to begin this month on Tuesday, October 14th.

Affected residents will receive a notice on their door at least one day before their residence will be affected. The work may take place anytime during the two days following receipt of the notice. If any problems are identified, and more working time is required, another notice will be given at that time.

Here is the list of streets that the City is focusing on this year:

  • South Park Drive: House numbers 41 to 73
  • Coral Crescent: All Houses
  • Lilac Bay: All Houses
  • Rose Street: All Houses
  • Elmdale Street: House number 420 to 448, and 294 (Steinbach Legion)
  • Fourth Street: House number 379 to 389
  • Kroeker Avenue: from Main Street to Third Street
  • Hanover Street: All Houses
  • Hospital Street: All Houses
  • Home Street: All Houses
  • Wilson Street: All Houses
  • Barkman Avenue: from Main Street to Mckenzie Avenue
  • First Street: from Southwood Drive to Barkman Avenue

If your street is listed above, you will receive notice a day or two before the work takes place.  Please look for the door hanger card at your front door.

Homeowners are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Toilets – Cover All toilet bowls (under the lid) with saran wrap to prevent water from spraying in some cases where the vent might be plugged or the main lines are extremely dirty.
  • Sinks & Bathtubs – Insert the plugs (in All sinks and bathtubs).
  • Floor Traps in the Basement – Place a piece of plastic under the cover and put something heavy on top of the trap.
  • Odours – If you experience an unpleasant odour in your house after the flushing process, run some water in All sinks with traps, flush the toilet, pour some water into the floor trap in the basement and open the windows for a short period of time. This should eliminate the odour.

Televising and cleaning will also be done on the storm sewers on Granite Park Drive and Carlton Drive, but this work will not affect any homes on these streets.

Uni-Jet cleans the pipes using a high-pressure flushing system that runs fresh water through the lines. Pressures ranging from 800 to 1500 psi are used to clear away any sedimentary deposits. Vacuum trucks pick up the water and sediments further down the line. A remote-controlled self-propelled camera vehicle is then sent through to inspect the line and ensure that the pipes are clean and the infrastructure is in good condition. The tracked machine that carries the camera is about 24” long and can be used to inspect pipes ranging from 6” to 18” in diameter.

Sewer lines on some other streets may be cleaned if time and budget Allow. Houses along those streets will be notified a day or two before their street is worked on.

The City thanks All residents in advance for their cooperation with the maintenance of our wastewater infrastructure.
