On Sunday May 31, 2009 shortly after 1:00 a.m., RCMP Fisherbranch Detachment were called by an area resident advising that a man was laying on Provincial Road 224, near a local store, at the north end of the Community of Peguis First Nation.
RCMP attended, EMS was also dispatched and the victim was identified on scene as a 54-year-old Peguis First Nation man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Evidence at the scene revealed the victim was struck by a vehicle. While at the scene, RCMP were approached by a woman and advised she was the driver that struck the pedestrian. Further investigation revealed information was provided with the intent to mislead the investigators. The car involved in the collision was located and seized by police.
On May 31st, a 40-year-old Fisher River woman was arrested and released on promise to appear to face public mischief charges. On June 1st, a nineteen-year-old Fisher River resident was also arrested and released on promise to appear. She will face charges of public mischief, fail to remain at the scene of an accident under the criminal code. She has also been charged for driving without a licence under the Highway Traffic Act.
Both are scheduled to appear in Peguis court on July 28, 2009.
The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.
RCMP Fisherbranch Detachment assisted by an RCMP Traffic Reconstructionist and RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.
