On December 9, 2014, at approximately 10:15pm, Stonewall RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Canada Way, around two kilometres west of Brookside Boulevard.
When officers arrived on scene, two vehicles were in the ditch. The two drivers had minor injuries and an ambulance attended to provide care.
Police say that the ambulance had its emergency lights activated and was parked in the curb lane on the westbound side of the road when a pickup truck came from behind and struck the ambulance. The ambulance was pushed into a male civilian who had attended the scene as a family member of one of the originally injured drivers. The civilian suffered minor injuries as did the two female MS workers inside the ambulance at the time of the collision.
RCMP report that the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene. RCMP continue to investigate.
In September, the Province of Manitoba announced a new amendment to the Highway Traffic Act stating that drivers traveling on multi-lane roadways are required to slow down and move to a lane farther from emergency vehicles. This is to ensure the safety of everyone at an emergency scene.
