On December 21, 2014, shortly after 2am, Steinbach RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Highway 52. Police say that the vehicle failed to stop and took off at a high rate of speed through the City of Steinbach. RCMP report that the vehicle raced through the red light at McKenzie Avenue and Highway 12. The pursuit then was called off due to poor road conditions and a high risk to public safety.
Due to a recent snowfall, police were able to follow the trail left by the vehicle as it traveled through the RM of Hanover, going off the road at one point and then returning to the road to continue driving. Other police units in the area witnessed the suspect vehicle turn into a yard on Road 26N. A man was then spotted running from the truck and was later apprehended in a field a short time later after being pursued by police.
RCMP report that the suspect, a 26-year-old man, has been charged with flight from police in a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, refusal to provide a breath sample and resisting arrest. The man was released on a promise to appear and will appear in Steinbach Provincial Court on January 15, 2015.
