On May 31, 2009, shortly before 10:00 AM., Wasagaming RCMP responded to a shooting on the Rolling River First Nation.
The investigation revealed that a 25 year old resident of the community had been shot in the lower body. He was transported to Brandon General Hospital were he underwent emergency surgery. The victim suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The accused initially fled the scene, but was located at a nearby residence. His negotiated surrender occurred without incident or injury. 50 year-old Charles Clifford French of Rolling River First Nation has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, aggravated assault as well as numerous firearms related offences. The accused has been remanded in custody and will make his first court appearance on June 3.
Wasagaming RCMP were assisted by Minnedosa detachment, Shoal Lake detachment, Waywayseecappo detachment, Russell detachment, Elphinstone detachment, Yorkton detachment Police Dog Section, the Brandon Major Crime Unit & the Forensic Identification Unit from Dauphin.
Alcohol is considered to be a factor. The investigation continues.
