Seven provincial pork organizations have agreed to help fund swine industry research being conducted through Swine Innovation Porc.
Last month provincial pork organizations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and PEI agreed to contribute funding to support research being conducted on behalf of Swine Innovation Porc.
Swine Innovation Porc chair Stewart Cressman explains under the agreement each provincial organization will contribute 2.5 cents per market hog to a pool of funds to help leverage the federal funding contribution provided through Growing Forward 2.
13 million dollars came from the federal government and the requirement was to have 25 percent funding in private funds so that required, over the five year period 4.7 million dollars.
When you take the number of pigs that are marketed annually in Canada and you take 2.5 cents that generates about 250 thousand per year.
Multiply it by the five year term of the agreement that generates 2.5 million and we need about 4.3 to 4.4 million to leverage the federal dollars so it still requires the fact that private companies come along side.
Our researchers have private individuals or firms that are also interested in the research that they’re doing and these sources of private funds assist in delivering the Growing Forward 2 suite of projects.
Cressman says, while the majority of the money provided through this agreement will be used to leverage the Growing Forward 2 contribution, some of the funds will be used to support technology transfer and to help fund additional research projects.
