Once again Manitoba is the national leader in charitable donations. According to Statistics Canada, 25.3 per cent of tax filers in the province declared a charitable donation on their 2013 income tax return.
This is the second year in a row that the same three provinces led, with Manitoba on top, followed by Prince Edward Island (24.1%) and Saskatchewan (23.4%).
Across the country the total amount of donations claimed rose 3.5 per cent from 2012, to a total of $8.6 billion – this includes a six per cent increase in Manitoba. Although the total number of donations increased, the number of donors actually decreased nationwide. This is not the case for Manitoba, which saw a 0.7 per cent increase in the number of people claiming donations.
