The Manitoba government is helping local technology companies build successful businesses, Jobs and the Economy Minister Kevin Chief announced.

“Manitobans are leading the way in developing some incredible technologies that are changing the way we work, play and learn,” Minister Chief said. “While good ideas can come from anywhere, we know the ideas that come from Manitoba succeed because of the unmatched support organizations ?like the Manitoba Technology Accelerator provide to get these ideas off the ground.”

The Manitoba government is investing an additional $600,000 over two years in the Manitoba Technology Accelerator (MTA) program.

The not-for-profit Manitoba Technology Accelerator is dedicated to helping technology startups with support such as business mentoring, coaching, networking and investment.

“Technology companies have unique needs in the early stages of business development. This program helps entrepreneurs secure the services and supports they need to grow from a smart idea to an active business that creates jobs and completes sales,” said Marshall Ring, chief executive officer, MTA. “This funding is a powerful driver to help foster entrepreneurship and innovation within our province.”

In the past year, the program provided support to nine companies specializing in medical devices, functional foods and nutraceuticals, and information and communications technologies. The MTA charges clients using a convertible debt note, which means clients pay for services after their company achieves financial success.

“The Manitoba Technology Accelerator has played a pivotal role in expanding our business and helping us sell our product to customers across North America,” said James Schellenberg, founder and chief technology officer of Cubresa, a Winnipeg company that manufactures and sells imaging devices to health researchers and hospitals. “The resources at the Manitoba Technology Accelerator have helped secure equity investment in Winnipeg and beyond. They have also helped us build our technology and sell our products to some world-leading organizations. We hope this will lead to medical breakthroughs for patients around the globe.”
