Roadway improvement projects will soon be underway in Steinbach, including intersection improvements, asphalt overlays and pathway construction taking place over the coming months.
“We have a really busy construction season this summer,” said Phil Kalyta, City of Steinbach Engineer, “We have work being done to improve some important intersections in the City including PTH 12 and Park Road as well as PTH 12 and Millwork Drive. We are also reconstructing Elmdale Avenue, increasing pathways and resurfacing streets.”
Although construction has been planned to minimize impacts to residents, the City would like to inform the public of construction dates and zones.
- Elmdale Avenue (between Reimer Avenue and Barkman Avenue) and Lumber Avenue (between Main Street and Elmdale Avenue) reconstruction will begin May 4th. The block between Reimer Avenue and Lumber Avenue will be closed off except to local traffic on that date, with construction progressing east to Barkman Avenue.
- PTH 12 and Millwork Drive intersection improvements will begin May 19th. As part of improvements, the center median at PTH 12 and Millwork Drive/Stone Bridge Crossing will be permanently closed. Left hand turns will no longer be available for north or south bound traffic on PTH 12. Motorists will be able to turn left using alternate routes including Penfeld Drive and Acres Drive.
- Penrose Crescent, Kimberly Bay and Madison Drive will all receive new asphalt overlays beginning May 25th.
- A new pathway and storm water detention pond will be constructed between Highpoint Lane and Deerfield Trail starting June 1st. The playground in this area will be accessible from Deerfield Trail throughout the project.
- PTH 12 and Park Road intersection improvements will begin June 1st. At least one north bound lane and one south bound lane on PTH 12 will be available throughout the project. Motorists will always have right turns available off and onto PTH 12 at the intersection, however left turns will be restricted or unavailable during much of the project. Motorists will be required to proceed to the next available intersection, make a U-turn and proceed from there. Pedestrian crossings will not be available for the duration of the project and sidewalks will be marked as closed. People wishing to cross PTH 12 are asked to proceed to the closest controlled pedestrian crossing at Loewen Blvd. Anyone choosing to cross at an uncontrolled crossing is urged to use extreme caution.
“With all construction projects, there’s always some disruption,” adds Kalyta, “but when possible construction is planned in phases to keep them to a minimum and the improvements in the end will be well worth it.”
The City of Steinbach would like to remind drivers to slow down and pay extra attention in construction zones and thanks the public for their cooperation during the construction season.
