On May 20, 2015, the RCMP Historical Case Unit conducted a renewed search of the site where the remains of Michael Kalanza were found in 1997.
In 1985, Michael Kalanza went missing from Faulkner, Manitoba. In 1997, a group of Grade 9 students from Ashern Central School went on a field trip to the old Spearhill limestone quarry. The students unearthed the human remains. DNA testing confirmed the remains were those of Michael Kalanza.
An extensive review of the case has been performed and created new investigative pathways, which the RCMP are actively pursuing. Investigators have made inquiries in the community, which has yielded new information. They have resubmitted DNA exhibits to undergo further testing with advanced technology and have done further forensic analysis on evidence with techniques not available at the time of the initial investigation.
On May 20, 2015, RCMP investigative teams were at the limestone quarry where the remains were found and are conducting another forensic search of the area.
This investigation has been a forensic challenge. Anthropologists have assisted investigators, and much of the information has come from forensic examination of collected evidence.
Unsolved RCMP cases remain open and active until a conclusion is reached. Investigators are continually looking into historical cases to see if a re-examination or further testing with advanced technology could possibly provide new leads.
