The Poverty Challenge is a Hanover School Division student-initiated all-night event that will be taking place from Friday at 7pm through Saturday morning at the K.R. Barkman Park in Steinbach.
Approximately 60 students will participate in this all-night student event that will consist of a walking tour of organizations that work with those affected by issues of poverty; listening to guest speakers from participating community organizations; participating in educational activities that focus on issues of poverty; and spending the night sleeping outside with little or no shelter.
The event will conclude with a fundraiser Community Pancake Breakfast at Southeast Helping Hands, located at 525 Main Street in Steinbach. Breakfast will be served Saturday morning by the Lion’s Club from 7am-10am. The public is encouraged to attend and support local agencies through donations. All funds received will go towards helping local agencies working with the homeless and those in poverty.
The purpose of this event is to give students of HSD a deep awareness and understanding of issues of homelessness and poverty, and how they affect people in Southeastern Manitoba; to introduce participants to agencies within our communities that work to support individuals and families affected by poverty; and to encourage participants to develop a fundraising project through which they can make contributions to local agencies.
