On July 26, 2015, at approximately 4:30am, two officers from Opaskwayak RCMP were patrolling on Kiche Maskanow when they observed a male riding an ATV, heading south.
Police say that the male made an abrupt left turn into a driveway and after parking his ATV, walked towards a residence. When told to stop, the male immediately fled and disappeared into a bush nearby. As one of the officers chased the suspect on foot, he discovered several items discarded by the suspect. The officer secured the evidence and continued to pursue the male.
The chase took both the officer and the suspect through nearly a kilometre of dense bush. The trail then opened up and the officer was able to observe the male. The male was then arrested without incident.
RCMP report that 23-year-old Clayton McKay, from Winnipeg was arrested. A check of the Police database revealed that McKay had a Canada wide warrant out of Alberta for being unlawfully at large. Clayton McKay has been unlawfully at large since January 10, 2015, when he failed to report as ordered by the Court.
A dog handler from The Pas Police Dog Services attended the scene and a subsequent search of the trail located several more items belonging to the suspect. In total, six envelopes containing cocaine and over four hundred dollars in cash were recovered.
In addition to being unlawfully at large, McKay faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of trespassing at night. He has been remanded in custody.
