Canadian race car driver and Niverville native, David Richert, raced in front of a record setting crowd of over 100,000 spectators at the TT Circuit Assen in Holland this past weekend. The weekend’s racing included the Gamma Racing Days and the Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup races, where 87,500 people showed up on race day alone.
As Canada’s lone representative in the weekend’s festivities, David Richert was excited to take part in such a huge event which also featured a Formula 1 demonstration by young Dutch phenom, Max Verstappen.
It was an absolute blast to be part of a weekend like this. By 10 in the morning the grandstands around the circuit were already completely full and to see everyone waving at you after the race was a special feeling. It’s a great reminder that I’m extremely privileged to be able to do what I am doing. ~ David Richert
Richert was able to get off to a good start in the race and maintain a solid pace until lap ten when a slight lock-up of the right front tire sent him off the edge of the race circuit and onto the paved run-off area. Unsure of whether or not there was a problem with the car, Richert attempted another lap before taking to the pits so the mechanics could take a closer look. With everything appearing alright, it was back out onto the race track to finish the race in 21st position.
I was happy with my pace in the early part of the race but then it felt like something very strange happened with the rear of the car as it seemed unstable under braking and acceleration, so I thought it was best to have the guys take a quick look at it before continuing the race. ~ David Richert
There will now be a break in the Formula Renault NEC schedule as the next race event will be at the Nurburgring in Germany from September 18-20.
