It was a fast paced Father’s Day at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course as Round 4 of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup was underway this past weekend.
On Friday, June 19, David Richert took time off from racing and spent it delivering toys to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Richert was able to raise several hundred dollars through providing people with an opportunity to write Father’s Day greetings on heart-shaped decals and placing them directly onto his race car. “It was really cool to leave the local toy store with a shopping cart overflowing with games and toys for the kids.” stated Richert.
After qualifying 14th during Saturday’s session, Richert was able to finish Sunday’s race in 17th position…just 3 tenths of a second behind pole sitter, Devin Cates, who finished 16th. With several cars crashing out and others running into each other, Richert feels he made the right call by hanging back from the pack. “We were over halfway through the race and there were about 7 cars dicing for positions, sometimes running 3 wide while cresting a hill and trying to make a corner all at the same time. Inevitably several of them ran into each other and at this point in my career, I am much happier finishing a few spots down than having to find an extra $5,000 before next race to pay for crash damage. So we’ll live to fight another day” says Richert.
By completing the entire race distance, Richert was able to raise over $600 more for Samaritan’s Purse allowing for the purchase of another six BioSand Water Filter units. For every minute that Richert is on track in an official Jetta TDI Cup race, over $20 is donated to Samaritan’s Purse.
