Canadian race car driver and Niverville native, David Richert, was able to score points this past weekend in Germany while facing challenging weather conditions.
Tucked into the picturesque Eifel mountains of Germany, the famous Nurburgring circuit was a wet and blustery place for this weekend’s Formula Renault NEC race. With morning temperatures in the single digits and low hanging clouds rolling over the hills, each day was a guessing game as to what the conditions would be once cars were circulating the track.
Drivers struggled under the difficult circumstances as it was often just wet enough to make things very slippery on dry weather tires, but not wet enough for wet weather tires. This trend held true on race day as a small amount of rain prior to the start of the race kept teams guessing on tire decisions, however, dry weather tires were ultimately the only choice. Then, halfway through the race, things got very interesting as rain began to fall but only in 3 corners around the circuit. Richert managed to fight through the changing conditions to finish in 18th position and score more points towards the overall championship result.
Racing at the Nurburgring has been a great experience despite the challenges presented by the weather conditions. It’s always difficult to learn and get faster when each lap presents you with new grip levels but it’s the same for everyone. So I just needed to push as hard as I could while avoiding any unnecessary risks. ~ David Richert
Richert’s next race will take place in two weeks at another of Germany’s historic Formula 1 circuits, Hockenheimring, from October 2-4.
