Nineteen economic development projects will receive $140,268 in funding through the province’s Partner 4 Growth grants. This announcement was made by Agriculture, Food, and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn.
“When communities work together, the province as a whole is stronger,” said Minister Kostyshyn. “Partner 4 Growth grants allow community leaders to look at the big picture, to identify what their people and industries need for a prosperous future, and then put those plans into motion.”
Partner 4 Growth provides funding to strengthen or diversify regional economic development in Manitoba communities, the minister said. This year, two separate intakes of applications are being processed. Funds from the first intake will see 14 grants of up to $8,000 provided to help communities identify regional development projects and undertake feasibility studies. Five grants of up to $15,000 will help complete the projects that will have a positive impact on the region.
Minister Kostyshyn said examples of funded projects include:
- organizing an assessment for an assisted living seniors housing complex in Carberry;
- hosting a job fair in Winkler partnering with local businesses and manufacturers;
- creating a marketing and promotions program supporting economic development opportunities in The Pas;
- conducting a feasibility study for a vocational school in Beausejour;
- developing a regional tourism strategy for the R.M. of Piney; and
- providing an electronic billboard to promote community events and local businesses in Russell.
To be eligible, all projects had to be regionally focused and involve more than one local government. These grants are cost-shared with the community, with government funding not to exceed 50 per cent of total project costs.
“Municipalities across the province know first-hand what kinds of projects will benefit the places they live, work and raise families,” said Chris Goertzen, president, Association of Manitoba Municipalities. “Combining funds raised locally with grants through Partner 4 Growth ensures these important projects keep moving forward.”
In its third year, Partner 4 Growth has distributed $390,000 in funding for 47 projects in Manitoba communities. More information about Partner 4 Growth is available online.
