Pedestrians will now be safer crossing Main Street at Kroeker Avenue in Steinbach, thanks to some new solar powered crosswalk lights. City staff put the final touches on the signs for the lights yesterday and are now fully operational.
“Council is always looking for ways to improve safety,” said Mayor Chris Goertzen. “These lights are less costly than the typical overhead intersection lights and still allow us to provide safety to our residents.”
The new lights are being installed after City Council heard concerns from residents about crossing the busy intersection. Traffic counts were completed and submitted to Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation. Results determined that pedestrian volumes were not significant enough to warrant a formal overhead lighted pedestrian corridor. As an alternative, the City installed the solar powered crosswalk lights to alleviate safety concerns.
Steinbach already has several similar pedestrian crosswalk lights installed around the City, including McKenzie Avenue, Loewen Boulevard and most recently, Park Road East. The cost of the new lights at Main Street and Kroeker Avenue is approximately $17,000.
