This is certainly the time of year to celebrate and enjoy the Holidays and their festivities, but far too many people are still choosing high-risk driving behaviours and drive while impaired.
Last year in Manitoba, 29 people lost their lives in 28 collisions caused by impaired drivers. 29 families went through the most difficult time of their lives as a direct result of those drivers who chose to drive while intoxicated. All these tragedies were completely preventable.
As RCMP officers do every year, all detachments and traffic units throughout the Province will be taking part in the Holiday Checkstop Campaign again this year.
“Some of your loved ones, friends and fellow neighbours are not getting home to their families because of impaired drivers, and it is our priority to change those irresponsible behaviours.” said Sgt. Bert Paquet of the Manitoba RCMP. “Please keep in mind your safety, and the safety of everyone else on the road, before getting behind the wheel, and make the smart decision.”
In addition to the Checkstop Campaign on Manitoba roads, Manitoba RCMP will launch a social media campaign called “Impaired Reality.” It is designed to show the harsh reality of impaired driving and what the true consequences can be. The RCMP will show the events that can unfold should you choose to drive while impaired and endanger the lives of others. Make sure to monitor our social media channels.
The Manitoba RCMP wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
