On April 7, 2016, at approximately 4:30am, RCMP officers from the Portage la Prairie Detachment responded within minutes of first being notified of reports of a shooting on Dakota Tipi First Nation. Additional RCMP resources were brought-in from across the province to ensure members of the community remained safe.
At approximately 1:20pm that afternoon, the RCMP Emergency Response Team along with Police Dog Service members arrested a male suspect in connection with the shooting. Police say that the arrest was made with no injuries to any member of the community, the suspect or to any officers.
On April 9, 31-year-old Irvine William Tyson Pashe of Dakota Tipi First Nation was charged with two counts of attempted murder, breaking and entering with intent to commit, uttering threats and five firearm related charges. Pashe was remanded in custody and recently appeared in Portage la Prairie Provincial Court.
RCMP report that dozens of tips were received and that police were in constant contact with many of the residents of the Dakota Tipi First Nation throughout the incident. The successful and peaceful conclusion of this incident was possible due to strong community involvement as well as a rapid response by Manitoba RCMP officers.
