On April 19, 2016, just before 5pm, RCMP officers responded to a report of an 11-year-old girl who had fallen into a spillway near the RM of Woodlands.
Initial police investigation revealed that the girl was playing with other children near the spillway when she fell into the water with her younger sister. While the younger sister was pulled to safety by other children, the victim never resurfaced.
Officers from nearby RCMP detachments, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, members of the local fire department, Portage Water Rescue as well as local volunteers attended the scene but were unable to locate the missing girl.
RCMP officers, emergency response personnel and volunteers remained at the scene overnight. At approximately 7:30am the next morning, the body of the missing girl was located.
