The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the circumstances that led to the injury of an intoxicated person at the Main Street Project detoxification centre on March 25, 2016.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the victim grabbed hold of a cell door as it was being closed by police officers, resulting in partial amputation of one finger. He was treated in hospital and released.
Under the Police Services Act, the IIU is required to investigate whenever serious injuries may have resulted from the actions of a police officer. Serious injuries, as defined in regulations, include the loss of any part of the body.
The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off-duty.
