Excess moisture claims by Manitoba producers primarily in eastern Manitoba and the Interlake confirmed 2009 was the wettest spring in the last four years and the third wettest spring in the last 10, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced.
“We are working with producers to help them deal with the significant challenges caused by this year’s weather conditions,” said Wowchuk. “We are committed to assist our farm families when they need it the most and will work to make insurance payments available as soon as possible.”
Statistics for the past 10 years show 2009 was the third wettest spring in that period.
Beginning with the 2000 crop year, producers enrolled in agri-insurance receive excess moisture insurance with no premium cost for basic $50 per acre coverage.
To help farmers cope with excess water conditions, information on a variety of topics including land management, crop options and insurance information is available at all GO offices and online.
