On July 31, 2009, at 1:50am, RCMP in Oxford House were called to investigate an assault with a weapon that occurred in the community.

Police learned that a 20-year-old man had armed himself with an aluminum baseball bat and sought out an unsuspecting 46-year-old man who was inside a nearby residence. When the homeowner refused to come outside the man armed with the bat began to smash the home’s windows. The homeowner then went outside the residence to defend his property when the attacker suddenly turned on him and struck him in the head with the bat. In an attempt to defend himself from the repeated blows, the homeowner armed himself with a hatchet and fought off the attacker who continued to pummel him with the bat.

The attacker fled the property and shortly after, attended the nearby Oxford House nursing station where he was subsequently medi-vaced to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg for treatment to his axe wounds on his wrists. The homeowner also attended the Oxford House nursing station for treatment to his head injuries. Fortunately, none of the injuries to either man were life threatening.

The Oxford House RCMP are continuing to investigate.
