The Gimli RCMP are reporting a safe and successful weekend in Gimli for the Icelandic Festival held over this August long weekend.
Increased presence on the streets of Gimli from foot and bicycle patrols, enabled Police to be more pro-active in their efforts to prevent drinking and rowdy behavior from getting out of hand. Cool weather and sporadic rainfall also assisted police in their efforts.
Over the course of the three day weekend police only lodged a total of 20 prisoners, a ten-year low in this category (down from 25 prisoners the year before and highs of 40 to 50 early in 2000-2005).
There was a noticeable difference in the weekend reveler’s attitude and behavior compared to past years. Police received favorable comments from the general public for their increased presence on foot and bicycle.
During the course of the weekend, police laid a total of 48 charges under the Highway Traffic Act to go along with 17 written warnings, 32 charges under the Liquor Control Act, seven 24 hour suspensions, one refuse a breath demand and two impaired / drive over 80 mgs%.
