This weekend marked the halfway point of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup season as Round 6 took place at the famous Road America race track in Wisconsin. Niverville racer, David Richert, was among the 26 driver field that took the green flag for what became one of the most challenging races in the season to date.
A few minutes before the race began, one of the most famous names in North American motorsport stolled into the Jetta TDI Cup tent. Dale Earnhardt Jr made a special trip out from Michigan, where the NASCAR Cup Series driver was competing this weekend, to watch the Jetta TDI Cup drivers in action before immediately returning to compete in his own Cup event.
Dale Jr. definitly got to see a lot of action as the Jetta TDI Cup race was not unlike the average NASCAR event as there was carnage everywhere. Richert managed to make it through the race unscathed to finish 19th, but there were many other drivers who were not that lucky. There was a substantial amount of bumping and crashing which included a car barrel-rolling through the grass and into the trackside fencing. All drivers walked away unharmed physically but with damaged race cars lining the course and penalties set to be handed out, the full extent of the damage is yet to be known.
“With our next race at Mosport just around the corner and a very busy couple of days between now and then, I was simply in survival mode this weekend, so I am very happy to leave here in one piece” said Richert. Round 7 will be the only Canadian stop for the Jetta TDI Cup which will take place at the Mosport Grand Prix just outside of Toronto.
