Officials with Manitoba Pork Council report the Pick Pork Grill Team has surpassed the quarter million served milestone.
Manitoba Pork Council’s Pick Pork Grill Team was established in 1996 with one cart and one person traveling to community events across the province to serve locally produced smoked pork loin on a bun along with the fixings as a means of promoting the consumption of pork in Manitoba.
Last week, while serving at the Casinos of Winnipeg Pink Ladies Golf Classic for Hope, the grill team officially surpassed 250 thousand served.
Manitoba Pork Council Consumer Marketing and Community Relations Programs Manager Susan Riese says the team caters all types of events from private functions to charity events within 150 kilometers of Winnipeg from about the beginning of May to mid-October.
The response from the public has been fabulous.
A lot of our advertising is word of mouth and, once people have had one of our pork on a bun sandwiches, they seem to want more and they often have an event of their own or tell their friends and so it’s really a word of mouth kind of a program.
It’s been an excellent program for us.
Just judging by its success and how long it’s been around it really speaks to the quality of the product we serve and our high standard of food safety which I think is really important today.
It’s an opportunity for us to get those messages out there, maybe even to dispel some of the myths around the product and the response has just grown over the years.
It’s a unique product.
It’s not available at retail so the only way that people can really get their hands on it is to either be at an event where we are or to host their own event.
Riese says the public has been really receptive to the product and to the pork industry in general especially given everything pork producers have been up against in the past year.
