Three young Manitobans will showcase their skills when they compete as part of Team Canada at the WorldSkills Competition being held in Calgary September 1 to 7, 2009, Competitiveness, Training and Trade Minister Andrew Swan announced.
“These young people’s elite skill levels are evidence of the excellent and competitive level of training offered by Manitoba’s education and training institutions,” said Swan. “They have spent countless hours training for this competition. With the help of their schools, teachers and trainers, they are ready for the challenge. We wish them well as they compete to take home medals in the joinery and mobile robotics programs.”
The three contestants will compete in their respective areas. They are:
• Travis Wieler from Grunthal (joinery);
• Pavlo Tovaryanskyy from Winnipeg (mobile robotics); and
• Myles Robinson from Winnipeg (mobile robotics).
The three Manitoba participants are graduates of technical programs offered by Manitoba high schools and colleges.
“Manitoba’s presence at the WorldSkills Competition reflects the government’s commitment to skilled trades and careers in technology,” said Swan. “Apprenticeship Manitoba and the Technical Vocational Initiative (TVI) promote opportunities available in skilled trades and technology in Manitoba. They offer exciting and rewarding career paths for our youth.”
Apprenticeship Manitoba and TVI will further display Manitoba’s world-class training programs and opportunities at the WorldSkills Village.
Through intense competition in 45 skill categories, WorldSkills Calgary 2009 will promote excellence and encourage global competency standards within the skill, trade and technology industries.
