Future of closed bridge to be determined after assessment
Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation advises its crews have safely removed damaged sections of the Pierre Delorme Bridge in St. Adolphe ahead of schedule. The bridge crosses the Red River at PR 210 west of St. Adolphe and was closed indefinitely on Aug. 21 after department staff noticed an issue with the structure.
Crews were able to minimize damage to the remaining sections of the structure during this process. Excavators were used and no explosive charges were used.
Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation is striving to save as much of the remaining structure as possible. Now the damaged sections have been removed, the department will be undertaking a full assessment of the bridge and the riverbank. It has not yet been determined if the bridge can be repaired or if it requires complete replacement.
The department says it is a priority to reopen the bridge, however it remains too early to determine when that will occur.
Concrete barriers and detour signs remain in place so motorists are not able to access the bridge, to further ensure public safety both on and under the bridge. Security has also been stationed at this location around the clock. Motorists, boaters and the general public are reminded not to travel on, walk on or boat under the bridge at any time, due to significant safety issues.
