On the evening of December 31, 2008 at 10:45 p.m., East Interlake Area RCMP, Riverton Fire Department and Interlake Regional Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a fire at the Radisson Hecla Resort in Hecla Provincial Park. As a result, 124 guests and 19 staff members were evacuated to the lobby of the hotel.
It was determined that the fire started and was contained to one of the dryers in the hotel’s laundry facility. Although the fire was contained to the laundry facility, smoke filled much of the hotel.
Guests were eventually permitted to return to their rooms.
The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner is continuing to investigate. The fire in not considered suspicious. Damage to the hotel is estimated at $5,000 (not including smoke damage). There were no injuries.
