Wednesday, September 30, 2009 is the due date for Steinbach property owners to pay their annual realty tax bills.

Tax bills issued this year total approximately $18.3 million, 40 percent ($7.3 million) of which represents the municipal portion.  The City’s portion of the realty taxes funds a variety of Steinbach projects, such as the asphalt resurfacing of Autumnwood Dr., Greenwood St. and Westwood St.; Brandt St. and Ellice Ave. sidewalk installations; completion of Steinbach’s Soccer Park parking lot and access road; and the Aquatic Centre’s new splash park.  It also funds municipal programs, including the City’s summer beautification program, street maintenance and snow clearing functions.  The remaining 60 percent of the annual tax levy is forwarded to the Province of Manitoba and the Hanover School Division to fund various school system projects and programs.

“Annual revenues from taxation grew significantly from last year due to significant property development in Steinbach,” said Troy Warkentin, City Treasurer.  “However, Steinbach taxpayers consistently experience the lowest municipal tax rate as compared to all other urban centres in Manitoba.”

Tax payments may be made in person or sent by mail to 225 Reimer Avenue, Steinbach, MB  R5G 2J1.  Property owners are encouraged to issue postdated cheques and drop them off prior to September 30, 2009.
