Attorney General Dave Chomiak will meet with his western counterparts tomorrow and Friday in Saskatoon to share information on best practices and discuss initiatives for fighting organized crime.

“Organized crime knows no boundaries.  It’s a serious problem across Canada,” Chomiak said.  “By working with other provinces we can seek to establish co-ordinated approaches that will help keep our communities safe.”

Attorneys general and solicitors general from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia will use the meeting to discuss enhanced integration and co-operation between police agencies, Crown prosecutors and court systems, improved interprovincial intelligence information gathering and sharing, addressing root causes of crime, and the pathways that lead youth and young adults into gangs.

“This week’s meeting follows on a successful meeting we held in March of this year and similar meetings with eastern provinces and the Government of Canada in the past three years,” Chomiak said.  “We look forward to reaping the benefits of this enhanced co-operation.”

In May, the Government of Manitoba also hosted a conference on organized crime that brought together 85 Crown attorneys and police officers from this province, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
