The Emergency Operations Centre will be presenting Steinbach Council with a Pandemic Event Plan at next week’s regular Council meeting.
“The Pandemic Event Plan has been in the works since the threat of the Avian Flu in 2006,” said Denis Vassart. “The Plan has been modified for the H1N1 virus and covers a number of areas including maintaining essential services such as water and waste water, solid waste disposal, street and road maintenance, fire protection, and assistance with police coverage as well as how we will cover other day to day operations for which the City is responsible.”
This plan works in conjunction with the Regional Pandemic Plan that has been prepared in cooperation with South Eastman Health and the fourteen municipalities, towns and cities that are covered by the South-East Regional Health Authority (SERHA).
Vassart, Steinbach’s Emergency Planning Coordinator, encourages all businesses and families to educate themselves on precautions for the H1N1 virus. All businesses should have a continuity plan in place for all emergencies including a pandemic event.
“It is important for businesses to have continuity plans in place if a second wave of H1N1 hits,” said Vassart. “Members of the public can take important precautions such as regular hand washing, covering your mouth with a tissue or using your sleeve when you cough, and staying home when you are sick.”
