October 9-12, 2009, will mark Operation Impact, the national campaign to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.
This special weekend has been strategically chosen as it is a significant long weekend with more people traveling and traffic crashes are more frequent. This police initiative is designed to remind people that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.
Educating the public in safe driving practices is the priority and our focus continues to be high risk behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users most at risk, these are: impaired driving, non use of seat belts, and all aspects related to aggressive driving.
All RCMP Traffic Services Units and Detachments will be participating in this initiative by increasing patrols and vigilance on our roadways.
“Heartbreak due to careless behaviours behind the wheel can be prevented,” said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, Commanding Officer of RCMP D Division. “Police agencies across the country are collaborating on this project to reduce tragedy resulting from high risk behaviours on the road.”
This initiative, Operation Impact, is one part of Road Safety Vision 2010, which has the goal of making Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2010.
