On October 15, 2009 at 9:15pm, Wasagaming RCMP were advised of a possible drowning at Clear Lake by the north shore.
RCMP responded and learned that two hunters had been hunting throughout the day among a larger group of people. They had shot two moose. The animals were tied to a canoe to enable transport back to their camp via the lake. As they made their way and got close to the north shore, it is believed that one hunter lost his balance, causing the canoe to capsize and both men entered the frigid water.
One hunter, a 33-year-old male from Oakburn, Manitoba, made it to shore. The second hunter, a 51-year-old Quebec resident, was found unconscious in the water and pulled to shore where CPR was initiated. First responders and medical personnel, dispatched at the site, continued resuscitation efforts to no avail. The 51-year-old Quebec man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
An autopsy has been scheduled in Brandon today. Foul play is not suspected and alcohol was not a factor in this matter.
