As of January 2010, Steinbach’s Landfill is subject to a Waste Reduction and Recycling Support (WRARS) levy implemented by the Province of Manitoba. The new legislation states that every municipality in the province will be required to collect $10 per metric tonne of waste disposed at that municipality’s landfill. All vehicles that are not scaled when dropping off waste at the Steinbach Landfill will be subject to a minimum fee of $5, both residents and non-residents alike.
Vehicles dropping off recyclable or compostable materials at the landfill will not be required to pay the $5 fee, and will be directed as to where to dispose of recyclable or compostable materials.
“Waste diversion is one of the highest priorities in communities and landfills today,” said Solid Waste Department Head, Eldon Wallman. “The future of our environment is impacted by how well we reduce, reuse, and recycle today.”
