On December 10, 2009 at approximately 6pm, Yellowhead RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision on highway 16 at Strathclair, Manitoba.

RCMP members from Shoal Lake, Hamiota, Elphinstone Detachments and an RCMP traffic analyst were assisted by Newdale and Strathclair Fire Departments and EMS.

Investigation determined that driver’s inattentiveness resulted in a west bound 1998 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 19-year-old Sioux Valley First Nation resident to cross the center line into the path of an east bound 1998 Freightliner semi-truck being driven by a British Columbia man.

The semi-truck driver’s evasive action was responsible for narrowly avoiding a head-on collision. Though damage was extensive, it was limited to the driver’s side of both vehicles. The Malibu’s occupants were taken to neighbouring hospitals treated for minor injuries ranging from bruising to soreness. The semi driver suffered no injuries. Seat belt usage was attributed to the safety of the drivers.

The driver of the Malibu is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash.
