On January 13, 2010, at about 9pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a fire in a residence on Long Plain First Nation.
On arrival, the residence was completely engulfed in flames and heavy smoke and was unable to be saved. Regional Health EMS and Long Plain First Nation Fire Department were also on scene.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner attended to assist with the investigation. The fire is believed to have been caused by an overheated pot on the stove.
A 27-year-old woman was transported to Portage General Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries reported.
Police and Fire officials continue to investigate.
