Not-for-profit organizations across Manitoba and municipal governments in rural Manitoba are invited to apply for grants from the provincial Green Team program to hire youth next summer, Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson announced.
“Our highly successful Hometown and Urban Green Team programs support job creation for high-school and post-secondary students who rely on summer employment to pay some of their education costs,” Bjornson said. “Students also learn valuable skills by working on community development projects that may range from youth recreation programs to housing rehabilitation and neighborhood safety.”
The province’s Hometown Green Team funding is available for the not-for-profit sector and municipal governments in rural Manitoba, while the Urban Green Team program is available to not-for-profit groups in Winnipeg. Organizations can hire up to four youth between May 4 and Aug. 21.
In addition to recreation, housing rehabilitation and neighbourhood safety projects, summer employees may focus on park and riverbank cleanups and public education programs on a variety of community development topics.
Summer employment sponsors in both the municipal government and not-for-profit sectors must meet the application deadline of Feb. 17 for jobs that will begin in May. For positions starting after June 15, applications must be received by April 6.
