Burning permits issued by Manitoba Conservation have been cancelled for the eastern and central regions of the province and no new permits will be issued until current weather conditions change to allow safe burning conditions.

The department said the cancellation was prompted by a number of recent grass fires in these regions.

The provincial Fire Program says many areas of the province remain very dry with the fire hazard increasing as the ground dries. Winds can push flames at a rapid pace, igniting large areas and spreading to forests.

Open fires are prohibited from April 1 to Nov. 15 annually, except under a burning permit or in enclosed approved fire pits.
