On January 17, 2009 around 5:00 AM Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing by the staff at Portage General Hospital.

Police attended the hospital and spoke with a male, who told police he was a victim of an attempted robbery. The male told police that he was walking home when a male approached him and demanded money. The victim did not have any money to give. The  male pulled out an edged weapon and attacked the victim, injuring him in the process. The suspect then fled the scene.

The suspect was described as male, 6′ or 183cm, aboriginal, long black hair with a thin mustache and goatee, and wearing a windbreaker.  The event took place on the hundred block of 8th St NW.  Anyone with information about this incident are asked to contact Portage la Prairie RCMP at 857-4445 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Under the Under The Gunshot and Stab Wounds Mandatory Reporting Act, Health care facilities are required to notify police if they treat someone with a gunshot or stab wound.
