On April 30, 2010, at about 10pm, RCMP Powerview Detachment along with the Pine Falls and Sagkeeng FN Fire Department, were dispatched to a house fire on the south shore of Sagkeeng FN.

RCMP report that one male perished in the fire. His identity, while suspected, has yet to be confirmed. His autopsy is scheduled tomorrow at the Health Sciences Centre. Another adult male in the residence was taken to hospital and is reported in intensive care.

RCMP continues to investigate with the assistance of the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

Exact damage estimates are not available at present, however, the fire caused extensive damage to the interior of the residence.

Update: 05/03/10 3:35pm

The deceased has been positively identified as a 45-year-old  man of Sagkeeng FN. His name is not being released. An autopsy was conducted at the Heath Sciences Centre on May 2, 2010, and the cause of death has been attributed to smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious and has been deemed accidental.
