With tree planting season underway, Manitoba Hydro has launched a new website tool to help Manitobans consider which trees to choose and where to put them.

Right Tree – Right Place is a new interactive application at www.hydro.mb.ca/tree. Users can browse or search for information about trees, including which trees are suitable and safe to plant in the proximity of power lines and hydro poles.

If tree branches grow to touch power lines, they can create serious safety risks by causing power interruptions, blackouts, and even starting explosive fires.

“Safety and reliability are two things we take very seriously,” said Bob Brennan, president and CEO of Manitoba Hydro.

“We are vigilant about monitoring for potential contacts between power lines and trees. But there are certainly advantages to helping people make more informed choices about trees and planting in the first place, to avoid problems down the road.”

The Right Tree – Right Place application provides information on 96 tree and shrub species, including their mature heights and suggested planting locations.
