The Dauphin Municipal RCMP with the assistance of the Dauphin Major Crime Services are investigating an attempted abduction of a 9-year-old girl that occurred on earlier this week.
The girl was walking home after school when she was approached by a lady in a car. The woman got out of the car and grabbed the girl by the arm telling her that her mother had asked the woman to pick her up. The girl asked for the password and when the woman didn’t respond, the girl broke free of the hold and ran to a safe place.
The suspect, a 38-year-old resident of Ethelbert, was arrested at her home on June 3, 2010 in the afternoon. Anita Karen Nissen has been charged with one count of abduction and has been remanded in custody to appear in Dauphin Provincial Court on June 7, 2010.
The password is part of a safe plan practiced by the girl’s family. It is because of this safe plan, the girl was able to recognize the danger and get away to a place of safety. The RCMP encourages parents to develop a plan such as this to help protect their children, and encourage them to consult with their local police if they need assistance.
Nissen is known to the family of the girl. Investigators feel this is an isolated incident and the investigation continues.
