On June 7, 2010, at approximately 9pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP along with local emergency services and ambulance were dispatched to the scene of a two vehicle collision at the junction of the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 16, just West of the City of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
Investigation revealed that a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling northbound through the intersection, when it was struck on the drivers side by a 2009 Buick Allure traveling eastbound on the #1 Highway. The intersection is controlled with traffic signals.
Witness reports indicate that the Volkswagen failed to stop at a red light and was struck on the drivers side by the Buick, which had the right-of-way with a green light.
The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta, a 41-year-old woman from Portage la Prairie was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 48-year-old male passenger, also from Portage la Prairie, was transported by ambulance to Portage la Prairie Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Buick Allure, a 60-year-old woman from the RM of Shellmouth Boulton, was transported by ambulance to Portage la Prairie General Hospital with serious, non life threatening injuries.
An RCMP Traffic Analyst attended to assist with the investigation.
There were no other vehicles or passengers involved and alcohol is considered to be a factor in the collision.
Police continue to investigate.
