Meeting in Fargo Wednesday to discuss border security, economic development
Steinbach MLA and P.C. Party Deputy Leader, Kelvin Goertzen, has been appointed by his party to the Midwest-Canada Relations Committee to deal with matter of common interest between Canada and the Midwest United States.
As part of his duties, Goertzen will be in Fargo on Wednesday to meet with U.S. Representatives on the issues of cross border security and economic development for the Midwest.
“There is a great deal of economic activity that happens between Manitoba and the Midwest United States. During challenging economic times in many parts of North America we need to ensure that those economic ties remain strong,” said Goertzen.
Goertzen also noted that issues of border security are also high on his list of concerns.
“The Canada-U.S. Border is both an international boundary and a trade vehicle. There are legitimate issues around how we keep the border secure but we also need to ensure it remains convenient for commercial traffic and for the recreational travel of law-abiding citizens,” said Goertzen.
Other committee members include Rep. Rashida Tlaib (Michigan), Speaker Steve Peters (Ontario), Rep. Ray Merrick (Kansas) and Speaker George Hickes (Manitoba).
Goertzen notes they will meet again in August around the issues of agricultural trade barriers and international copyright.
