On June 18, 2010 a group of Manitoba hog producers discovered a severe case of animal neglect in a barn near Notre Dame de Lourdes. They took immediate action, called RCMP and provincial veterinarians and worked with the authorities to handle the situation.

Manitoba Pork Council (MPC) wishes to express its shock and disgust over this tragic case.

Manitoba’s pork producers are distressed and saddened by this totally unacceptable situation, which reflects a complete rejection of our members’ values and standards of animal care.

We gratefully acknowledge the swift actions of the producers who discovered the problem and the provincial veterinarians who answered the call to help deal with the situation.

MPC fully supports the provincial authorities, led by Dr. Wayne Lees, Chief Veterinary Officer for Manitoba, in this matter. Furthermore, we encourage them to investigate and take the necessary actions to hold the individuals responsible.
