The City of Steinbach reports on their 2010 projects including sewer watermain renewals, asphalt projects, lagoon expansion and residential developments.
Sewer Watermain Renewals
The Cedar Crescent watermain pipe renewal project has been completed and the watermain was put in service on June 22. Residential hookups will take place this week and surface restoration is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.
The Henry Street sewer and watermain pipe replacement was recently completed. An additional section of damaged watermain needed replacement at the southeast corner of Henry Street and Reimer Avenue at an additional cost of $100,000. Street resurfacing should be completed within the next two weeks. Maple Leaf Construction was the contractor for both the Cedar Crescent and Henry Street watermain / sewer renewal projects.
Asphalt Overlay Projects
The Citys asphalt overlay projects will be completed by July 3. This year, the following streets were resurfaced, including concreting of curbs and gutters:
• Beaver Crescent
• Barkman Avenue, between Hespeler Street Penner Street
• Willow Place
• Willow Crescent, from Main Street to Willow Place
The total cost of street resurfacing for 2010 was $463,000. Bituminex Paving Ltd. was the contractor for these overlay projects.
Lagoon Expansion
The City is currently working on expanding its existing lagoon. The scope of the project includes constructing three effluent storage cells with a combined size of approximately 1.0 million square metres, and adding a primary wastewater treatment cell of approximately 30,000 square metres. Although work began in April 2010, the lagoon project is almost two months behind schedule, due largely to weather issues. The project is still expected to be completed in the fall of 2010, even with the setbacks.
Residential Developments
A number of residential areas are currently being developed in Steinbach as well. Progress is being made in the Mooney Avenue (Maple Leaf Construction) and Edgewood Avenue (Borland Construction) developments, despite adverse weather conditions and standing water. Goldmark Development will be starting another new development next week, called Grandview Drive (off Giesbrecht Street).
